CHENNAI: With only a few days remaining for making water and sewage tax payment, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metrowater) has intensified action against defaulters. On Monday, the water manager sealed a movie theatre and a godown for failing to pay tax for years.

According to a Metrowater official, Meenakshi theatre management has failed to pay tax since 2018-2019 financial year and has a default of Rs 4.20 lakh.

Similarly, the officials sealed a godown on Kamaraj Salai in Madhavaram. The owner of the building failed to pay since 2017-2018 financial year and has a default of Rs 2.60 lakh.

A few days ago, the Metrowater official sealed a commercial building in Sai Nagar on Arcot Road. The building owner has a tax default of Rs 1.85 lakh and the owner has not paid since 2015.

The water manager has warned the building owners of similar action if they fail to pay the water and sewerage taxes. Water and sewerage taxes are being calculated based on the property tax collected by the Chennai Corporation.

As per the rules, the building owners should pay water and sewage tax before September 30 for the first of the financial year and March 30 for the second half.
