CHENNAI: A mathematics graduate from Krishnagiri who indulged in the knife-point robbery of several home-alone women in the city after sexually assaulting them in some of the cases has been found guilty of his offences by a city court.

He was prosecuted in the case registered by the Guindy All women police. On November 15, 2017, the accused, M Arivazhagan forced himself into the house of a 25-year-old woman and sexually assaulted her under knifepoint. He then escaped with her three sovereign gold jewellery. Based on the woman’s complaint, Guindy All Women police registered a case and arrested Arivazhagan subsequently.

Police investigations had revealed that Arivazhagan was a serial offender who had raped several home-alone women under knifepoint and then robbed their gold chain. The accused himself had confessed to this to investigating officers, according to reports. Apart from molesting and raping the women, he also recorded the act on his mobile phone, police said.

“He used to approach lone women in the pretext of seeking an address or asking for water and robbed them,” a police officer said.

Arivazhagan is a native of Mathur in Krishnagiri district. A graduate in Mathematics, he is also believed to have indulged in criminal activities in Krishnagiri too. He was working in Bengaluru for a few months before he came to Chennai seeking a job. After four years of trial, a city court found him guilty of the charges made against him by the Guindy all women police and sentenced him to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on him.

City Police Commissioner, Shankar Jiwal appreciated the police team for securing the conviction of the accused.
