CHENNAI: In a bid to implement the recommendations of a report prepared for increasing own source revenue, the Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to appoint private agencies to inspect the buildings that are under-assessed for property tax and reassess them.

A Chennai Corporation official said that a resolution will be passed in the upcoming council meeting. "There are over 2 lakh buildings in the city that are under-assessed. They are paying lesser property tax than the actual tax amount. We have reassessed around 50,000 buildings out of 2 lakh buildings with our own manpower," he added.

However, the exercise is huge owing to which the civic body proposed to appoint private agency. The selected private agency will visit all the under assessed building and measure the properties. It may be noted that the civic body identified under assessed buildings using GIS technology and drone survey.

"The agency will submit reports of their inspections. Based the report, property tax will be revised," the official said.

The own source revenue report estimated Rs. 2,800 Crore revenue in the next three years using several measures.
