Chennai police seized 236.65 kgs of Gutkha in one week

CHENNAI: In a special drive against banned tobacco products held from September 4 to September 10, Chennai police have booked 108 cases and arrested 109 persons. Police have seized 236.65 kgs of gutka, 39.12 kgs of mawa, one mobile phone and one two-wheeler in the special drive.

Of the total seizure, Velachery police accounted for the most, according to an official release. They seized nearly 103 kgs of gutka and arrested one person, D Thangamuthu (40) last Tuesday.

Kolathur police made a seizure of 45 kg of oral tobacco products on September 9 while Koyambedu police made a seizure of 30.1 kg.

The city police are conducting a special drive across Chennai to curb the illegal trade of banned tobacco products. Titled the Drive Against Banned Tobacco Products, the drive aims to reduce the use of gutka, mawa, and other banned tobacco products in the city.
