AAI orders removal of encroachments near Chennai airport

Recently, the AAI formed a special team to inspect the area and it was found that 90 buildings were constructed without getting proper approval from the government and 102 cellphone towers, poles, and trees are being a disturbance to flight operations.

CHENNAI: The Airports Authority of India has ordered removal of the encroachments that which are disturbing the secondary runway of the Chennai International Airport.

"The Chennai airport consists of two runways, the primary runway is 3.66 km and the secondary runway is 2.89 km. The secondary runway is used by small aircrafts for take-off and landing," airport official sources. Though the secondary runway is 2.89 km only 2.11 km is usable. They said that in Kolapakkam several buildings are constructed by exceeding height limit. Recently, the AAI formed a special team to inspect the area and it was found that 90 buildings were constructed without getting proper approval from the government and 102 cellphone towers, poles, and trees are being a disturbance to flight operations.

Following that, the AAI ordered the Chennai airport officials to remove the encroachments that are disturbing the runway. The airport officials along with the Chengalpattu district administration have started issuing notices to the buildings and soon the encroachments and illegal structures will be removed so that more flights can take off and depart from the Chennai airport, official airport sources said.
