The Madras High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government to file its response to public interest litigation alleging several irregularities and mismanagement of office by the Controller of Examination (COE), Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore.

A division bench of Justice M Duraiswamy and Justice TV Thamilselvi passed the order on hearing the plea by a retired professor I Elangovan.

The petitioner sought a direction to order a DVAC probe into the irregularities that include financial mismanagements allegedly exhibited by the COE.

"The respondent has been involved in several malpractices. He floated a tender in favour of private firms which is against examination procedures and the privacy of the university," the petitioner alleged.

He further submitted that the COE had misappropriated the university funds.

"I made a representation to the Chancellor of the university and secretaries of the higher education department and finance department. However, the authorities forwarded my complaint to the VC and Registrar of the university. How could people who are facing the charges could inquire about the charges raised against them," the petitioner noted.

On recording these submissions, the judges directed the State government to file a response to this petition by April 20.
