CHENNAI: “A detailed project report will be prepared to implement Ring Main System to ensure uniform water supply across the city,” KN Nehru, state municipal administration minister, announced in the state assembly.

He added that water supply is being carried out through seven distribution stations, which makes uniform water supply difficult. “The Ring Main System will be like Ring Roads,” he explained.

In another announcement, Nehru said water from irrigation lakes will be drawn to provide drinking water to rural and urban areas of the Chennai Metropolitan Area, as usage of water for irrigation has reduced due to urbanisation.

To measure the amount of water treated and distributed, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) will install smart meters at water treatment plants and distribution stations. The meters will help the water managers in preventing the loss of water while distributing.

“Water supply infrastructure will be upgraded in Kodambakkam and Adyar zones at a cost of Rs 1,958.25 crore to supply drinking water round the clock. To find a permanent solution to shortcomings in Anna Main Road (KK Nagar) sewage line, a project will be implemented at a cost of Rs 31.53 crore. Sewage line from Ashok Nagar sewage pumping station to Nesapakkam sewage pumping station will be improved,” Nehru said.

Similar improvement work will be implemented in Alandur and a detailed project report will be prepared.

Combined drinking water schemes will be implemented in Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchy, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Namakkal, Salem, The Nilgris, Chengalpattu, Kallakuruchi, Vilupuram, Tiruvallur and Cuddalore districts at a cost of Rs 269.50 crore to benefit 14.12 lakh citizens.
