Chennai: 3.6 lakh cases booked for traffic violations in August

The drive was initiated as analysis of the road traffic accidents in Greater Chennai City reported from January 1 to September 7 this year revealed that 659 victims lost their lives and 3,325 people sustained injuries in road traffic accidents. Of this, 26 per cent (173) of the fatalities and 37 per cent (1,214) of the injured were involving two-wheelers.

Since the analysis revealed that 74 per cent (126) of the total number of victims did not wear helmets, a study was conducted in June this year which confirmed that only 73 per cent of the two-wheeler riders wore helmets in the city.

The special drive aimed at stringently booking traffic violations and 3,58,548 cases were registered in August alone, of which 1,29,240 were booked for riding two-wheelers without a helmet.

The drive has increased the percentage of two-wheeler riders wearing helmets by 14 per cent from 72 per cent to 86 per cent.

The traffic police wing wants to continue the drive until 100 per cent of bike riders comply with the helmet rule.
