Int’l racket busted, Rs 7cr drugs seized in city

Three people were arrested by Narcotics Control Bureau sleuths when they tried to smuggle in 8 kg of methamphetamine, a party drug, worth over Rs 7 crore concealed in tea packets from the Myanmar border.

Acting on specific intelligence input received by NCB, Chennai, a team of sleuths on Tuesday intercepted a truck near Karanodai Toll Plaza near Chennai and recovered eight packets of high quality methamphetamine from a wooden box in the truck. The packets weighing one kilogram each were packed in golden, yellow and green coloured tea packets with foreign language marking. The driver of the vehicle V Jagadeeswaran was immediately arrested. 

The methamphetamine in white crystalline form was sourced from Indo-Myanmar border by two people M Mariappan and G Ramesh, residents of Chennai, a press release from the NCB zonal director Amit Ghawate stated. 

Following the recovery of the contraband, both Mariappan and Ramesh were immediately apprehended from a tea stall near Minjur Toll Plaza, Chennai. They confessed to have procured the contraband from Myanmar through Manipur-based drug traffickers. 

The recreational drug was brought to Chennai in the seized truck and was meant for sale in the city in small quantities, the arrested men revealed to police. Both the individuals used to live in Moreh, Manipur, before shifting to Chennai. They indulged in drug trafficking using same modus operandi several times in the past, NCB officials pointed out in the communique. Various authorities have of late, seized methamphetamine from different parts of the State during the recent past revealing the high demand for the drug.
