5.1-quake in Bay of Bengal triggers tremors in Chennai
Chennai was rattled by mild tremors that were triggered by an earthquake at a depth of 10 km in the Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh coast at 12.35 pm on Tuesday. The effect of the quake was felt in a few parts of the city, including Anna Salai, Nungambakkam and Porur, said the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the 5.1 magnitude quake in the Bay of Bengal was about 320 km east north east of Chennai and 296 km south-south east of Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
N Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, told DT Next the epicentre of the earthquake was at the depth of 10 km in the Bay of Bengal. “It is reported to be of 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale. So mild tremors were experienced at various parts of the city, including Besant Nagar, Anna Nagar and Nungambakkam. However, only those who were sitting would have experienced the tremor. People need not fear this earthquake,” he said.
People living in areas like Adyar and neighbouring Tiruvanmiyur, besides Nanganallur said they felt mild tremors, with some Twitter users saying they could even see the furniture shaking.
Slight tremors were felt in Kakinada, Razole, Palakollu and Narsapuram towns in Andhra Pradesh.
