According to the order, works such as desalting, standardisation of tank bund including formation of foreshore bund and dewatering arrangements, construction of rationing wall, construction of inlet arrangements, reconstruct of weir and regulators, supply channel standardisation and improvements, Melmalayur tank bund strengthening and weir reconstruction and formation of children’s park arrangements would be undertaken as part of the work.

Kolavoy lake is one of the largest lakes in Chengalpattu. The Kolavoy lake system contains 26 lakes, including the mother lake. But in the recent years, water from the lake could not be used due to pollution. In 2019, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had issued orders to restore the lake. Based on the order, an estimate was prepared by the Public Works Department (PWD).

Officials from PWD said that once Kolavoy lake is restored, it will help maintain groundwater table in Chengalpattu district. By setting up a pipeline for 50 km, water from the lake could be transported to Porur lake to meet the water needs of Chennai city, officials said.
