As a part of a special drive, the Chennai police teamed up with the cybercrime department in October to track missing phones across the city. They used IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers of the phones to trace them swiftly.

On Tuesday, in a programme arranged in Rajarathinam stadium, Chennai Commissioner Maheshkumar Agarwal IPS, Additional Commissioners R Dhinakaran (South) and A Arun (North) handed over the phones back to the owners.

This drive earned the police a lot of praise as happy phone owners took to thanking them publicly like Mohan Raj, a resident of Maduravoyal. He had lost two phones in the last three months and was ecstatic when he got both of them back.

The police had retrieved 863 phones in a special drive to trace lost or stolen phones.

In September, at the end of a similar drive, the Chennai police had retrieved and returned 1,193 mobiles.
