The incident happened in the zero hours of Thursday when the victim Rakesh (40), who runs a dental college in Alapakkam, was at his house in Krishna Nagar, Maduravoyal, along with a few house helps. As many as seven men reached the house in a car and a two-wheeler and among them were Rakesh’s friend-turned-foe Ramasubramani. Claiming to be CBI officials, they told Rakesh that Ramasubramani has revealed his illegal dealings and demanded Rs 10 lakh for not arresting him.

While Rakesh said he did not have so much money, the gang reduced the amount and finally came down to Rs 1 lakh. Rakesh, who grew suspicious, is said to have alerted his brother over the phone on the pretext of getting money from another room.

His brother alerted an inspector who was previously in-charge of Maduravoyal station and he alerted crime inspector Ravindran. Immediately, a team rushed to the spot and rounded up the gang. While two managed to flee on the bike, the other five including Ramasubramani were secured.

They were identified as Narendra Nath, Stalin, Yovan and Shankar. A probe revealed that Ramasubramani hatched a plan to rob Rakesh and formed the gang to threaten him posing as cops. All five were remanded in judicial custody.
