“The water level at Chembarambakkam lake reached 22.15 feet. Since the inflow increased due to the
rain, water will be released in a controlled manner. The discharge may increase further as the inflow
increases due to rains. Therefore, the residents living in the low lying areas close to the Adyar River are requested to be cautious,” the Chennai Corporation announcement said.

The civic body also released helpline numbers for emergency contact. The numbers are 044 25384530, 044 25384540, 9445190210 (Kodambakkam zone), 9445190211 (Valasaravakkam zone), 9445190212 (Alandur zone), 94451902123 (Adyar zone) and 1913.

Meanwhile, Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said special teams are ready at the lake to monitor the opening of shutters. He added that relief centres would be opened based on the requirement.

It may be noted that suburban areas like Mudichur and Manimangalam were flooded after the lake was opened a few days ago, forcing the NDRF to rescue residents using boats.

As per Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) data, Chembaramkkam lake had 3,137 mcft of water against its full capacity of 3,645 mcft on Thursday evening.

Five lakes, including the newly augmented Thervoy Kandigai lake, had a combined storage of 9,682 mcft against their total capacity of 11,757 mcft.
