Bids invited for suspension bridge across Villivakkam lake
The city will soon get its first suspension bridge over a lake as the Greater Chennai Corporation has invited bidders to construct the steel structure over the Villivakkam lake, which is being restored as a recreational spot.

According to a Chennai Corporation source, the tender was floated two days ago soon after the design of the bridge was prepared. “The suspension bridge would come across the lake connecting the two bunds, on which the visitors could be allowed to walk and enjoy the lake view,” an official said.
The Chennai Corporation, under the Smart City Mission, has taken up the eco-restoration and beautification of Villivakkam lake to convert it into a recreational spot.
Under the project, the civic body had already prepared a detailed project report for the Lake to build a children’s park, adult gym, walkers’ pathway, Aavin parlour, multipurpose lawn and open-air theatre and works are underway.
The suspension bridge will come up at a cost of more than Rs 4 crore. Bids will be opened on December 22. Meanwhile, the civic body is also planning to create bird islands in the middle of the lake as a tourist attraction.
