23-year-old kills self over online game debt

Days after the State government promulgated an ordinance against online gaming that involves money, a 23-year-old software engineer died by suicide at his house near Adambakkam on Monday night, reportedly driven to despair by his inability to pay the money that he had borrowed to play an online game.

The deceased, Sai Aravind of New Colony in Adambakkam, was working in an IT firm. Officials said Sai Aravind was in stress because of workload for the past few days. Around 8 pm on Monday, the family noticed his room was locked for a long time. When they broke-open the door, they found him hanging.

On information, a team from Adambakkam police station reached the house and retrieved the body. It was sent for post-mortem examination at the Chromepet government hospital. Aravind’s mother told the officials that he had borrowed money to play online rummy game but he was unable to pay back the money. After coming under severe pressure to return the money, Aravind was dejected for the past few days. The police suspect that he might have killed himself due to this. The police have registered a case and further investigation is on. This is the latest in a string of deaths by suicides reported by individuals addicted to online gaming in the State.
