Heavy rain in the offing for city, neighbouring areas

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram on Thursday, and is likely to continue for the next 48 hours, said officials from the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

Many parts of the city, including Adyar and Guindy, received more than 3 cm rainfall, while other areas like Meenambakkam, Nungambakkam, Perambur and Vadapalani recorded 2 cm rainfall. Parts of north Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Tiruvarur and Thoothukudi also received at least 2 cm rainfall during the day.

 According to the weather update from the Regional Meteorological Centre, the trough from southwest to west central Bay of Bengal runs from above cyclonic circulation near southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu coast and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.

 The cyclonic circulation is likely to lead to thunderstorm with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and heavy rainfall is likely to be expected in Chengalpattu and other neighbouring districts in next 48 hours.

 Weather blogger Pradeep John added that the rain may continue in Chennai with steady and varying intensity, and more rain is expected on Friday.

 Meanwhile, the sky condition in Chennai is likely to be generally cloudy, and intermittent or heavy rainfall is expected in some areas in Chennai and neighbouring districts for the next 48 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures in the city are likely to be around 28 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius respectively.

 On Thursday, Nungambakkam recorded maximum temperature of 28.6 degree Celsius and minimum of 24.4 degree Celsius. The weather station at Meenambakkam recorded maximum temperature of 29.7 degree Celsius and minimum of 24.3 degree Celsius respectively.

 The minimum and maximum temperatures in the city went down by about 3 degree Celsius and 1 degree Celsius respectively when compared to the normal temperatures.
