Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash, along with the civic officials, inspected the land parcel, which has been earmarked to construct a new fish market, on Friday. Speaking to the reporters, Prakash said that the new fish market would come up with modern facilities to ensure hygiene.

“The fish market will have a parking space where 400 two-wheelers and 80 cars can be parked. This will prevent encroachment on Loop Road,” he added.
Much to the chagrin of the fishermen and fish vendors along Loop Road, the Corporation has decided to evict vendors from pavements on the road and allot space inside the upcoming fish market. There are around 300 fish shops on the road and fishermen are demanding shops on the sand along the road, instead of the new market. However, the Corporation and fisheries department, citing coastal regulation zone (CRZ) regulation, have turned down the request.
“Fish vendors have agreed to move to the new fish market. Chennai Corporation is taking measures to impose regulations. A team of Corporation officials and police officials will monitor the beach,” he said. When asked about reopening of Marina Beach to the public, Prakash said that the decision should be taken by the State government as citizens from across the State would visit the beach.
