'Amma Canteen' was an initiative by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, in 2013, a scheme to provide quality food at a subsidized price and it was a huge success. Even during COVID-19 lock down period, these canteens were permitted to function with the subsidized price list and it served as a blessing in disguise for the daily wagers as all the restaurants and food outlets were shut.

Further into it, the Tamil Nadu government has now announced mobile 'Amma Canteen', which will have mobile vehicles that would take subsidized food mainly to places where construction workers and laborers are present. Currently 3 mobile canteens were inaugurated, one for each - North Chennai, Central Chennai and South Chennai. Officials said that mobile canteens will be implemented in all zones in near future.

The corporation officials further said that the mobile Amma Canteens will function from 7 am to 10 am in the morning for breakfast and the lunch time will be from 12 pm to 3 pm. While there is no parcel service available, the mobile unit is equipped with in-built hand washing facilities and garbage disposal.

Earlier, reports said that the civic body has spent around Rs 100 crore for the purchase of mobile units and enhancement of the running units, from the allotted funds for AMMA canteen.
