Metro patronage doubles in a month

Chennai Metro Rail saw about 100 per cent increase in passenger patronage in October after it resumed services in September with a lean ridership following six months of lockdown.

 According to CMRL data, 10,63,416 passengers travelled on Metro train from September 7 to October 31. Of this, 7.10 lakh travelled in October as against 3.60 lakh in September. On October 29, a total of 30,515 passengers used the Metro train to commute.

 An official release said the Metro services resumed in a graded manner in the Blue Line between Airport to Washermenpet from September 7 and Green Line between St.Thomas Mount and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Central Metro via Koyambedu on September 9.

 “In October, 19,607 passengers utilised the recently launched QR code ticketing system even as 4,34,289 passengers used the travel card. CMRL offers a 20 per cent discount on QR code ticketing namely single journey QR ticket, return journey QR ticket, group QR ticket and QR trip pass from September 11. It also offers a 10 per cent discount for passengers using travel cards,” it said.

 All the entrance gates at all Metro stations have been opened to the public, also, the facilities inside the stations such as lifts, escalators and subways connecting the entrance of the stations.

 The CMRL has also requested passengers to cooperate with security, ticketing and other staff for a safe and smooth travel in its effort to prevent the spread of COVID19 by maintaining social distancing.
