The deceased were friends travelling to T Nagar in Chennai to attend a function there. The deceased were identified as Jayaraman, 70, a priest; Moorthy, 60; Murugan, 55; and Senthil, 40. Jayaraman was to conduct a function at a locality in T Nagar, police said.

The accident happened around 5.30 am on a stretch of ECR where there was no road divider. The car was crushed in the impact of the mishap.

It looks like the container lorry driver lost control and his vehicle hit the car head-on killing three victims on the spot. Moorthy died at Chengalpet GH without responding to treatment at around 9 am. The other two injured, including a woman, are under treatment at Chengalpet GH.

The police noted that the driver of lorry escaped from the accident scene leaving the vehicle behind.

The accident also led to a traffic jam on the road for nearly one hour until the police removed the mangled remains of the vehicles.
