Met warns of strongwinds, rain, asks fishers not to venture out

Those who are out to fish have also been asked to return to the coast.

According to officials, thunderstorms are expected across the State and winds between 40 to 60 kmph are expected along the coastal regions over the next five days. Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Theni, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Namakkal and Vellore are also expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall on October 10.

Popular weather blogger Pradeep John, who runs the Facebook page Tamil Nadu Weatherman, added that typical pre-Northeast monsoon rains were seen in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and interiors parts of the State, too. “Overhead clouds will form like today in Chennai and along coastal areas after hot day. As low [pressure] develops and moves towards north Andhra Pradesh, convergence shifts to north Tamil Nadu. We can see good thunderstorms,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chennai city received occasional bursts of rain early in the morning, followed by sunny afternoon. According S Balachandran, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, “These rains are due to the movements of the easterly winds. There has been some moisture build-up over the last few days. So we can expect light to moderate rains in the city for the next two days.”

The maximum temperature recorded at Nungambakkam station was 34.6 degree Celsius while it was 34.5 degree Celsius at Meenambakkam. The minimum temperatures were 28.3 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius respectively.
