“We are able to receive more produce and store more due to the available facilities at the market. This has led to a 20 per cent decrease in the prices of many vegetables, with some even falling by 30 per cent. More vendors have also been able to put up their shops at Koyambedu, so there is more supply,” said P Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Vegetable Merchant’s Association.

The price of beans per kg is expected to be at Rs 50 this week and broad beans has fallen from Rs 45 per kg to Rs 30-40. The price of potatoes has fallen to Rs 30 from Rs 35-37 per kg last week. Tomatoes are available at Rs 30-40.

The market will only be open to wholesale purchases of over 50 kgs, and retail shops remain closed. However, some vendors are hoping for the full reopening of the market with safety measures to increase business profits.
