Besides, an additional nursing station will also be added to the facility to run basic diagnostic tests and radiology procedures, and support the additional beds.

The moblie units are equipped with oxygen facility, and would be able to run tests like ECG, X-ray, scan and blood tests. Hospital dean Dr P Vasanthamani said that the authorities have planned to set up mobile ICUs in three government hospitals to study their efficiency and stability.

“The mobile units reduce the need for separate infrastructure to provide intensive care to critical patients. The units are planned to be installed in Buddusamy Block in KMCH. As they are modular units, they can be easily replaced later,” said Dr Vasanthamani.

These units are built in such a way that each one can be made fully functional in just five days. Senior officials from the State Health Department said once the efficiency of the mobile ICUs is proven, such units can be used in rural areas and non-district headquarter hospitals, too.
