A phone number found in the bag left by the kidnapper, Sunil of Assam, at the construction site in Royapuram railway complex, where the victim’s parents were working, proved crucial for the police to rescue the girl, Marjina. While the phone number was bought in Assam and remained switched off, the police checked its call records and found that a call was made from a number in Chennai.

The person who made the call was traced to a construction site in Okkiyam Thoraipakkam and identified as Gopal. The police grilled him and called Sunil’s relatives in Assam and his photos were obtained. Also, the investigation revealed that he has worked in several constructions in the city as well as in Chengalpattu district.

While the police shared his photos to the railway police as well as the Assam police to secure him if spotted, the photos were shared with workers of about 100 under-construction sites in and around Chennai. Since Gopal had also requested his friends to inform him if they know anything about the girl, on Thursday, he received a call from one Sunita, another construction labourer in Navalur, that there is a girl in the neighbouring construction site in Navalur. “Since she told Gopal that the girl refuses to go with his ‘father’, Gopal immediately alerted us,” said Royapuram Assistant Commissioner S Dhinagaran.

However, when the police rushed to the spot, Sunil had already gone. The girl, Marjiina, was rescued and reunited with her parents. The police said that Sunil reached the construction site on September 7 seeking job claiming that Marjina was his daughter and that he separated from his wife three days ago. While the workers had kept the girl with them, he left the spot and returned only on September 13.

When However the girl refused to go with him, fellow workers grew suspicious and asked him to come with his wife. On Wednesday, he returned to take the girl away but the police were informed.

A hunt has been launched for the accused and a special ream was rewarded by the Commissioner on Thursday for securing the child. The accused, Sunil, met the victim’s father Bablu outside the MGR Chennai Central on September 6 and escaped with his elder daughter.
