Apart from improving its overall ranking, Chennai has also been selected as the winner in the category of Best Mega City in Innovation and Best Practices with more than 40 lakh population.
The Best Mega City award was for implementing the Madras Waste Exchange Platform. The Corporation had launched the programme under the Smart City Mission. Tamil Nadu has also performed better than the previous year and secured 10th rank among the States. The city and the State secured 1,156.01 and 2,010.93 points respectively. Among the Tamil Nadu cities, Coimbatore and Madurai secured the 40 and the 42nd rank with 2,337.12 and 2,255.81 points respectively.
Even as Tiruchy was adjudged as the cleanest in TN among cities with less than a million population, the city witnessed a drastic fall in national ranking to 102 – a nosedive from the 6th position it had secured in 2017. As per the survey, Tiruchy, which has a population of 8,47,387, scored 3360.47 out of 6,000 marks. This put it to 102 among 382 cities in the less than 10 lakh category. This is a steep fall from the rank 6 it had in 2017, which fell to 13 in 2018 and 39 in 2019. Among other cities from the State in the category are Tirunelveli (159), Salem (173) and Tirupur (223).
