Since the accused, Jamuna Devi of Akkarai, did not return the money even after police gave her time twice, she was arrested on Tuesday and remanded in judicial custody.

The police said that Jamuna Devi is into financing, with her office functioning at Vadapalani. Since her husband Devaraj is into taking government contracts, Jamuna Devi wooed one Saravanan (48) of Ramapuram to get a government job for his wife and took money in four instalments in 2019 to the tune of Rs 12 lakh.

However, since she did not get his wife the promised job and refused to return the money, Saravanan lodged a complaint at the Neelankarai police station.

While Jamuna Devi promised to return the sum in three months, she failed to do so. After this, as per the instructions of Adyar Deputy Commissioner V Vikraman, inspector Jochim Jerry arrested her and remanded her in judicial custody.

The police, after investigation, said that she cheated at least four other men the same way and swindled Rs 50 lakh in all.

The Vepery police arrested a man for cheating his friend of Rs 2.75 lakh. The accused Dileep of Vepery and victim B Praveen of Kilpauk have been friends for years and their families know each other.

Police said Dileep recently received Rs 2.5 lakh from Praveen claiming that he has got a consignment of brand new phones worth several lakhs and that they can share the profit. Dileep also took another Rs 25,000 towards miscellaneous expenses.
