The accused were celebrating the birthday of Aun of Ranga Nagar, Chromepet, police said. To make his birthday ‘special’, his friends ordered three cakes and made him cut them with a two-foot-long machete on a road in Ranga Nagar with loud music playing in the background, thus creating a public nuisance.
A video of the celebration was shared with the City Police Commissioner’s office on WhatsApp by a resident after which St Thomas Mount Deputy Commissioner R Prabakar was alerted. Sankar Nagar inspector Pasupathy, who was on the night rounds, on information, launched a hunt for them with his team and managed to secure five of them overnight. The others were identified as Kotteshwaran, Ramu, Mukeshraj and Sureshkumar.
All of them were remanded in judicial custody. Though none of them has any cases pending against them, further investigation is on whether the youngsters have any rivalry with others in the locality. A hunt has been launched for a few more youngsters in connection with the incident.
