According to a Corporation official, the civic body had spent more than Rs 18 crore during the first complete lockdown and more than Rs 23 crore during the second complete lockdown for the canteens.
“We are already running short of funds as we are spending more on the fight against COVID-19. We need more funds to continue the fight. A proposal has been sent to the government seeking funds and are hoping of getting approval,” the official said.
On normal days, each of the 407 Amma Canteens would cater to about 150 customers. This doubled to more than 300 during the complete lockdown period. Complete lockdown in the city was imposed for the period of April 26 to April 29 and June 19 to July 5.
