A senior official from the Directorate of School Education seeking anonymity told DT Next that expect for exam centres set up to conduct Class 10 board exams, sanitisation and maintenance works could be carried out in all other government and government-aided schools.

Admitting that there were reports, especially in the southern districts, where Southwest monsoon was active that roofs of classrooms were partially damaged due to wide-spread rain, the official said, “In addition, several headmasters, who opened the schools couple of times for storing textbooks, also complained that bushes and unwanted plants have grown around the premises,” he said.

Stating that it is a huge task to clean the schools post lockdown, the official said, “once the total shutdown period ends authorities will be deployed to take a detailed survey about the condition of the schools.”

Several parents-teachers’ associations have also sent suggestions in connection with the works that have to be carried before allowing students back, he added.

“The state expert committee, constituted to look into academic loss, is also looking into the school maintenance issue very seriously,” he said. Clearing of bushes, classroom safety, drinking water and others need to be ensured.
