M Nagarajan, a Grade II constable attached to the Armed Reserve wing of Greater Chennai Police, had been posted at Vepery police station. On July 3, he submitted samples for the test and was declared positive the next day. He was admitted at the COVID care centre at IIT-Madras the same day.

On Sunday, Nagarajan was shifted to Omandurar Government Hospital after his condition worsened, but he died without responding to treatment on Monday morning.

After inspector S Balamurali and SSI Manimaran, Nagarajan is the third COVID victim in the city, and is the youngest of the three. City police commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal condoled his death and said, “He sacrificed his life at the altar of duty as a Corona Warrior. Let’s resolve to follow norms and defeat corona.”

A native of Madurai, Nagarajan joined the force in 2013 and is survived by his wife and one-year-old daughter. So far, 1,327 personnel from Greater Chennai Police have tested COVID positive, of whom 586 have been discharged after treatment.

Meanwhile, police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal welcomed Mylapore Deputy Commissioner Deshmukh Shekar Sanjay and other police personnel of Mylapore police station in person, as they returned to duty after getting discharged following treatment.
