Recovery rate in worst-affected zones better than other areas
A data released by the Greater Chennai Corporation has revealed that the recovery rate in worst-affected zones like Royapuram and Tondiarpet is much higher than the other zones.

According to the data released on Monday, the Royapuram zone has registered 70 per cent recovery rate and Tondiarpet registered 67 per cent. Of the total 7,659 and 6,393 confirmed cases in Royapuram and Tondiarpet, as many as 5,376 and 4,291 persons have recovered respectively.
Also, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam zones have registered more than 60 per cent recovery. Overall, the city has a recovery rate of 59 per cent and the death rate of 1.50 per cent, as on Monday morning. As many as 31,858 persons have recovered and 21,094 persons are undergoing treatment. Apart from this, 809 persons died.
Among the 15 zones, Alandur and Tiruvottiyur have the lowest recovery rate at 47 and 48 per cent. However, the active caseloads in the zones are 705 and 1,053 only.
The data transpires more than 100 deaths in Tondiarpet (112 deaths), Royapuram (130 deaths) and Teynampet (124 deaths) zones were recorded.
It may be noted that the State government has instructed the civic body to send the asymptomatic patients to their homes from COVID care centres after 14 days, without taking exit tests. Even for the persons admitted to hospitals with symptoms, exit tests have been stopped once the symptoms subside. The move has resulted in some patients dying at the homes after discharged from hospitals or COVID care centres.
“My father was sent home after spending 14 days in COVID care centre a few weeks ago. Two days he was sent home, he died of complications linked to COVID-19,” Sugumar (name changed) said.
Earlier, when the number of cases in the State was under control, the government was conducting exit tests and the patients were sent home only after their samples turned negative.
Meanwhile, Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash reiterated that the persons, who have given samples for testing and their family members would be quarantined until the results are released. “If the test confirms negative, they can engage in their regular activities by following the instructions. If the test confirms positive, the family will be quarantined,” he added.
‘Recovery rate improved to 60.8 %’
The recovery rate has improved by more than 10 percentage points in the last 10 days, said Food Minister R Kamaraj.
“On June 8, when Ministers were given the charge of three zones each, the recovery rate was just 50.04 per cent. But as on Monday, it has improved to 60.8 per cent. Only 32 per cent of patients are under treatment,” said Kamaraj.
The Minister, who reviewed works in three zones on Monday, added that 90.79 per cent ration cardholders were given Rs 1,000 in Chennai, while it is 82.9 per cent in Madurai.
Meanwhile, there are 703 containment zones across the State as on June 26, most of them in Chennai (104), followed by Salem (84) and Tiruvannamalai (72).
