Plaint against theatres, FIR for brawl, CM cell reply leaves activist baffled

An activist who lodged a complaint with the CM Cell about unauthorised film screening and overcharging for vehicle parking was shocked to learn that MGR Nagar police had registered an unrelated FIR of a drunken brawl in front of a wine shop based on his petition.

In a reply via CM cell, the city police said case number 53/2020 has been registered based on an activist’s complaint of an illegal show at a theatre in Jafferkhanpet. “But the said FIR is about a drunken brawl in front of wine shop near Ramapuram,” activist Kasimayan said.

Kasimayan had complained to CM cell on December 27, last year in connection with shows in a theatre and got a reply on June 22 saying that a case has been registered under crime number 53/2020. Since he believed that theatre owners are treated with kid gloves on violations, he was pleasantly surprised to receive a reply, though after six months, saying an FIR has been registered based on his complaint.

However, his happiness proved short-lived. “The FIR was registered against somebody for drunken brawl happened at least 2 km away from the theatre against which I had lodged a complaint. I don’t know how can they fool me with a such an official reply,” said Kasimayan, who feels CM cell may not have verified or cross-checked the FIR to find out if the police had registered the case or not as claimed in the report.

He also believes it may not be a clerical error. “We don’t know if this tactic of giving FIR details of a totally different case is to close the complaints received through CM cell,” he said.
