Social distancing fails as people queue for Rs 1,000
Even as the State government announced Rs 1,000 aid for all the ration cardholders in Chennai at their doorstep, officials are allegedly not issuing the money door-to-door in certain areas in southern suburbs forcing hundreds of residents to gather for collecting the money.
Chennai
Sources said on Monday that Rs 1,000 was issued in many places in Chengalpattu. In the Selliyamman Koil street near Irumbuliyur, the civil supply staff, who sat in one corner of the street announced that they are issuing the money and people from nearby streets can come and collect it. Soon, hundreds of people gathered at the spot and there was no social distance. When few of the residents questioned about door-to-door delivery, the staff said that they do not have enough manpower and it is not possible now. The situation was the same in some places in Pallavaram, Chromepet, Pammal and Anagaputhur.
