The commission has asked the SP to submit a report on whether any action has been taken against erring officials.

SHRC Acting Chairperson D Jayachandran, who initiated the suo motu proceedings, has asked how the police officials can insist e-pass though he produced the ID card to show that he is working with Tangedco, which is an essential service. The commission has also asked the officials to reply on whether the police action was not amounting to a violation of human rights.

“The report should be submitted within four weeks and in the event of any default, the commission may proceed to take action as it deems fit and proper,” said Acting Chairperson Jayachandran. Further, SHRC directed the DGP to dive suitable instructions to his subordinates on this issue.

On Sunday, a Tangedco employee residing in Thiruvallur district was on the way to work near Avadi. When he tried to enter Chennai, the police personnel on duty insisted on an e-pass to pass the border. The employee showed his ID card and requested them to allow him to enter Chennai, but the officers who were on duty thrashed him, the media report said.
