The Coastal Security Group, which seized the large quantity of the narcotic, decided to hand over the case to the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau of the State police as it is better equipped to handle such cases.

A barrel with 78 packets of meth powder with mandarin letters printed on it was found washed ashore on Saturday.

Fishermen of Kokilamedu hamlet, who went for fishing on Saturday morning, noticed the sealed barrel washed ashore with a mandarin inscription on it. They immediately alerted the police and Coastal Security officials, who seized the contents of the barrel only to realise later that it was Rs 106 crore worth contraband. The sachets had ‘refined Chinese tea’ printed on it in English. Police believe that the drug could be dumped somewhere in the high seas by smugglers after enforcing officials approached them.
