The civic body has proposed the protect under ‘urban space’ project to boost non-motorised transport in the city. “Under the project, we will create walkway and cycle tracks along the Buckingham Canal from Kasturibai MRTS station in Madya Kailash Junction to Tiruvanmiyur MRTS near Tidel Park signal,” a Chennai Corporation official said.

As a part of the project, the civic body will remove the unwanted vegetation along the banks to make way for the new avenue trees. The project would come on 2.2 Kilometre stretch.

The civic body has decided to implement the project in two phases and has floated two tenders separately for Kasturibai MRTS to Indiranagar MRTS and Indiranagar MRTS to Tiruvanmiyur MRTS. The project will be implemented at a cost of Rs 18 crore under

Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP).

A few months ago, the civic body prepared a detailed project report (DPR) and sent for the approval of the State government. “Following the approval from the government, we floated the tender. Tenders will be finalised during the first week of July,” the official added. It is learnt that the civic body has received no-objection from the Public Works Department (PWD) as the Buckingham Canal is under the maintenance of PWD.

Apart from the Buckingham Canal project, it also has plans to take up a similar project on the banks of the Mambalam canal.
