Manali has less than 1/10th of Royapuram’s 6k cases
With 160 fresh cases on Saturday, the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Royapuram zone has crossed 6,000. The zone has 6,141 cases, including 2,250 active cases.

Madhavaram zone also had crossed 1,000 cases as on Saturday morning following other zones in extended areas such as Tiruvottiyur, Ambattur and Valasaravakkam.
With only 547 confirmed cases so far, Manali remains the least affected zone in the city. In the extended zone, only 243 persons are under treatment.
“We have intensified the door-to-door fever survey and fever camps to identify persons with symptoms. Also, pulse oximeters have been given to workers in Tondiarpet, Royapuram and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zones,” an official said.
However, the deaths reported in the city are increasing. As of Saturday morning, 529 persons died, taking the mortality rate to 1.40 per cent. A few weeks ago, the mortality rate in the city was under 1 per cent. Among the zones, Royapuram has reported 97 deaths, followed by Tondiarpet (72), Thiru Vi Ka Nagar (71) and Teynampet (70).
Meanwhile, the Corporation took over the hostels of Anna University to be used as COVID care centres. A team of officials visited the campus on Saturday to check the facilities available and new facilities to be created. “We will shift students’ belongings to another hall. It will be used to house asymptomatic persons. The hostels will ensure more than 600 additional beds,” the official said.
