Vegetable prices shoot up due to supply shortage
The prices of vegetables have increased by up to 10 per cent following a shortage in supply at Tirumazhisai market on Sunday. Vendors said that the prices would remain the same as the season for second crops has started.

“Usually, when the season for second crops starts, the prices would increase. We expected the second crop in March but it got delayed,” said P Sukumaran, secretary, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Merchants’ Association.
Currently, tomato is being sold for Rs 20 – Rs 30 per kg, chilli for Rs 40 per kg, ginger for Rs 70 – Rs 80, carrot for Rs 25, beetroot for Rs 35, radish for Rs 20, beans for Rs 70, broad beans for Rs 45 to Rs 50 and brinjal for Rs 30 – Rs 35.
“Only a few vegetables have increased in price. There won’t be a hike in prices like we faced the previous years. The prices are expected to come down after July 15, which is the season for third crops,” said Thiagarajan R, a vegetable trader at Tirumazhisai market.
