While most of them are asymptomatic and stable, one of the students, who recovered after treatment last week has tested positive again.

Samples from 58 students staying at Madras Medical College and Hospital men’s hostel on Broadway were sent for testing on Friday. Of the total samples, 42 students tested positive and are under isolation now.

About 200 samples from PG students, CRRIs and other medicos who have been working at RGGGH are being tested in a day. The students from COVID-19 ward, medicos who were in contact with others who tested positive with mild or moderate symptoms are being tested.

Students of several departments, including cardiology, anesthesiology, rheumatology, emergency unit, have tested positive.

“Most of the students, who have tested positive, are asymptomatic. They are all stable and under isolation. They have been given medications as per the treatment protocol. However, many of them were not on duty at COVID-19 ward but still tested positive for COVID-19,” said medical superintendent at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital Dr Narayana Swami.

However, a large number of medicos at government hospitals in the city rue that the hospital authorities are not following adequate protocols to test their samples. Dr Narayana Swami said that all doctors are tested after one week’s duty at COVID-19 ward, which is followed by self-quarantine for 14 days.
