Man sets ablaze wife, stepson in Maduravoyal

A 40-year-old woman and her 21-year-old son were charred to death after her husband allegedly doused them with thinner and set them ablaze when they were asleep in their rented house in Maduravoyal in the wee hours of Sunday. Her daughter escaped with minor injuries.

The deceased Koresha Begum and her son Akram Ali suffered 95 per cent burns and did not respond to treatment at Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. Her daughter Maji Ali (13) suffered burns on her nose and has been hospitalised. The accused Makbul Ali (40) is said to be Koresha Begum’s second husband and the children were born from her previous marriage.

The family moved from Kolkata to Chennai four years ago and Koresha Begum and Akram Ali started working in a footwear making unit in Velappanchavadi.

Since Makbul Ali was addicted to liquor and did not have a job, Koresha Begum allegedly often fought with him and did not allow him inside the house at Noombal. However, Makbul Ali often reached the house, inebriated and fought with her.

On Saturday too, he returned home and quarrelled with Koresha Begum. However, since she did not allow him inside the house, an infuriated Makbul returned around 2 am and poured thinner (a liquid usually used to dilute the paint) on his wife and stepchildren, who were asleep near the window, and set them on fire.

Hearing their cries for help, neighbours put out the fire and rushed them to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

Based on the statements from Maji Ali, Maduravoyal police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for the suspect Makbul Ali. A photo of him has been shared with all the police stations through the police control room. Since there is no public transport available in the city due to lockdown, police said there is no scope for accused to leave the locality. Further investigation is on.
