12-year-old boy hangs self in Neelankarai

The deceased Dashwanth (12), a Class 5 student, was son of couple Boopalan and Usha. Boopalan works in a lathe unit near the house, whereas his wife Usha is a housemaid. The incident happened on Wednesday morning when the couple was out for work. While playing with his younger brother Pramod (9) in the house, Dahswanth allegedly broke one of the glass trays in the refrigerator.

After Pramod scared Dashwanth that their father may get angry with him, Dashwanth hanged self from hook meant for fan using a nylon rope. After Pramod alerted Boopalan about the incident, the latter rushed to the house and rescued Dashwanth. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Neelankarai police sent the body to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. Police said that since the house had a terracotta roof, it became easy for Dashwanth to reach the hook attached to a wooden log.
