SHRC seeks report on freak police station incidents

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Thursday asked the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner to file a status report on the number of people who have ‘slipped’ inside the bathrooms in city’s police stations since 2017 and whether any action was taken against officials responsible for maintaining the restrooms.

SHRC acting chairperson Durai Jayachandran suo motu asked the police commissioner to file a status report based on a DT Next report that one 45-year-old N Devendran ‘slipped’ and fractured his hand at Ambattur police station. The commission also sought reply from the city’s top cop regarding the steps taken by him to prevent such incidents in the bathrooms of the police stations in future.

Taking a jibe at police officials, the SHRC has asked the commissioner whether any police official has so far slipped inside the bathrooms at stations. Further, SHRC asked the commissioner to file a report within two weeks by post and warned that in event of default, the commission may proceed to take such action as it deems fit and proper.

The issue pertains to a case filed by Special sub-inspector M Nathamani of Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) against Devendran in Ambattur police station. Nathamani alleged that Devendran had posted abusive and vulgar messages about Ambattur PEW inspector George Miller in a WhatsApp group.

Based on his complaint, police arrested Devendran and during the interrogation, he ‘slipped’ inside the bathroom and fractured his hand. According to the media report, Devendran had two cases pending against him in Tirumullaivoyal.
