    Probe ordered after drunk cops threaten neighbours

    Tension prevailed in Villivakkam during the zero hours of Tuesday after two inebriated police personnel verbally abused the neighbours when they questioned the duo’s loud birthday celebrations.

    They were identified as D Yuvaraj (28) of Annai Sathya Nagar in Villivakkam, a Grade two constable in the third battalion of the Tamil Nadu Special Police, and S Jegadeesh (27) of Tiruvottiyur, also a constable in the fifth battalion. Yuvaraj had invited Jegadeesh to celebrate his birthday.

    After the duo created nuisance with loud noises at around 12.30 am on their terrace, the neighbours woke up and informed the police. The men, who were under the influence of alcohol, allegedly verbally abused the women, further angering the neighbours.

    After an argument broke out between the neighbours and duo, the police control room was alerted. A team from Villivakkam police station reached the spot in a patrol vehicle, and took the duo to the police station. A video of the two policemen being taken to the station is circulating on social media.

    A formal complaint was lodged against the policemen, and the complainants later alleged that they were indirectly threatened to withdraw the complaint to avoid being booked based on the counter complaint against them.

    When contacted, a senior police officer said that the police have not received a formal complaint yet but an inquiry has been ordered into the allegations. “The report would be submitted to the respective heads to initiate departmental action against the policemen if they are found guilty,” said the officer
