The Madras High Court disposed of 446 cases, and the subordinate courts 10,206 cases amid the COVID19 lockdown between March 26 and May 7.

High Court Registrar General C Kumarappan said in a statement that out of the 732 cases instituted in the principal bench of the Madras High Court in Chennai, 341 cases were disposed of.

During the same period, the Madurai Bench disposed of 105 cases of the 215 cases that were instituted.

Similarly, out of the 12,109 cases instituted before subordinate courts in Tamil Nadu, as many as 10,206 cases were disposed of.

Following the lockdown, the Madras High Court and subordinate courts had resorted to hearing urgent matters initially through Zoom platform but subsequently switched over to video conferencing after concerns were raised over the security of the app.

In his statement, the Registrar General pointed out that the court has only been hearing cases through video conferencing from April 18 onwards.
