“The DMK is interested to bear the cost of the food sold in these Amma Canteens across the state,” MP and party organisation Secretary RS Bharathi stated in a letter to the Chief Secretary.

Alleging that Amma Canteens were forcibly taken over by the ruling AIADMK men to feed their cadre at the cost of state’s infrastructure depriving the real beneficiaries, the DMK leader said, “such an act is highly discriminatory and dangerous to a welfare state.”

Stating that the DMK was interested in bearing the costs of food sold in these Amma Canteens throughout the state, including some of voluntary organisations and philanthropists, the memorandum alleged that the act of certain municipal authorities secretly supporting AIADMK members and issuing statements favouring them does not augur well for the government. “The DMK, therefore, requests the government and municipal authorities to frame transparent, open and fair scheme for opening more of such canteens throughout the state,” Bharathi said adding “so that it would enable the participation of DMK and other interested political parties.”
