Cargo trains a big hit during shutdown period
The Parcel Cargo Express Trains (PCET), operated by the Southern Railway (SR), have proved to be a saving grace during the lockdown.

The SR has managed to ferry over 120 tonnes of medical supplies to many parts of the country in around a fortnight. Thanks to some intensive marketing, customers, mostly one’s handling medical equipment and medicine, have managed to book parcels using the PCET even as all passenger services remain suspended till May 3. Till Saturday, April 18, the SR had despatched 120.41 tonnes of medical supplies, including 73.87 tonnes of medicines, to different parts of the country.
The SR has now launched SETU (Swift and Efficient Transport of Utilities), a 24x7 dedicated helpline number 9025342449, to help customers seeking assistance in booking parcels during the lockdown. Of the 120 tonnes achieved by the whole zone, Chennai division alone accounts for 47.07 tonnes in the last three days alone. The medical consignment was sent to major cities like New Delhi, Howrah, Dimapur, Yeswantpur, Coimbatore and Nagercoil.
The SR had also created a dedicated website www.srcommercialmas.com and mobile app to ease access to information pertaining to parcel special train operations, which has also been made available on its official twitter handle.
To intensify its operation, the SR has also created a customer database through which it regularly follows up with customers to increase transport of medical supplies during the lockdown.
