The couples were identified as A Nur Amin (38) and wife Anita Kurniasih (36); S Sukaliat (47) and Tika (44); A Ahmed Haidlorillah (52) and Tis Atul Mukarromah (45); and Abdul Sahlan (58) and wife Tumini (56). After reaching Delhi on a tourist visa on March 3, the couples attended the Tablighi Jamaat conference in Nizamuddin before reaching Chennai by train on March 21. They reached Madurantakam on the same day and stayed at a mosque to carry on with their religious activities even after the State came under lockdown from March 24.

On April 5, after the Village Administrative Officer alerted the police, the couples were secured and handed over to Revenue and Health officials for further action. They were subjected to medical tests for COVID-19 and quarantined.

However, since they did not test positive for COVID-19, all eight persons were remanded in judicial custody on Saturday. They have been booked under Sections 188, 269, 270 and 271 of IPC and 14 of Foreigners Act.
