Some break curfew, but for a cause

On a day when Janata Curfew kept motorists away from the city roads, a few locals threw caution to winds and took out their vehicles, but for a cause.

As per the curfew, non-essential services were to remain shut from 7 am to 9 pm. However, some domestic workers were seen on their way to work on Sunday. “Yes, I know I’m supposed to be at home, but my clients are old. They need my help,” said Thangam, a domestic worker.

Thangam was not alone. There were many others too including some autorickshaw drivers who decided to ply after getting some ‘emergency calls’. Some also ventured out to meet unforeseen happenings like bringing home a stranded friend or family member.

Some residents could be seen taking their dogs out for a stroll as the roads were empty and safe. A teenager who was out on the road told DT Next: “The roads are rarely this empty. We want to ride our bikes and enjoy.” They believe they will be fine from the disease because they are young and not at risk.

At Besant Nagar, DT Next ran into a physicallychallenged man painting his tricycle on the road. “I won’t get another day like this. I have all the road for myself and can even dry up my cycle,” he said.
