Don’t turn blind eye to us, say protesters at Washermenpet
On completing 20 days, protestors at Washermenpet undertook a blindfolded protest on Wednesday, as part of their stance against the CAA, NPR and NRC.
Chennai
Around 1,500 women and 400 men took part in the protest and remained blindfolded as they continued to shout slogans through the day. “Remaining blindfolded is a symbolic gesture. We feel that the government is turning a blind eye to the deaths in Delhi as well as the protesters who are still coming en masse to stand against the bill. It is a reflection of those in power,” sources said.
This move follows a candlelight vigil that was held on Tuesday for the 46 people killed from the riots in Delhi. The protests at Washermenpet have also featured a Hindu baby shower and a marriage held during the protests. According to organisers, this move is one to keep the focus on them.
“People are easily bored, and they do not pay attention to continuous protests unless there is something new happening. We want to keep people interested so that they continue to lend their support to our cause,” they said.
The Shaheen Bagh-type protests is being led by women in the area.
